Miracle Chinese Detox

He Shou Wu

Living in Hong Kong I am surrounded by an abundance of fresh vegetables, live fish and meats on the streets. The melange makes for a very colourful neighbourhood – the aroma however, is another story.

One amazing thing I found here tucked away in a Chinese traditional medicine shop is a root herb known for its detoxifying benefits and ability to get rid of bloating – He Shou Wu (or Fo-ti Root).

PHD Cleanse

phd-cleanse

Indulgent is a word I have used far too often lately when describing meals out and social appointments alike. So last week I chose to practice the virtues of another word… repentance.

My repentance came in the form of PHD Cleanse.

Dummy’s Guide to Food Labeling

Nowadays there’s an abundance of ‘health foods’ on supermarket shelves, aisles dedicated to organics, yogurts ‘straight from the farm’ and an array of gluten-free, biodynamic, free-range, ethically harvested delights. But are they really healthy or is it food-marketing dancing on a fine line.

Herbal Rescue

Frequenting the local garden centres in the past would not have been my idea of a good time. However, I now seem to be at one with nature spending my weekends shopping for plants and potting mix. Maybe I’m getting older… who knows. I do however feel a burst of satisfaction each time I look over at my plant collection at home. Sure, the first few weeks experimenting with my plant fetish were touch and go… I couldn’t remember if the fern I bought from the markets went inside or out until a week later when it was lying near lifeless on the terrace.

Sparkling Mineral Water

There’s nothing like a cold glass of refreshing sparkling mineral water… other than a glass of Champagne. However, as a healthier topic of discussion let me talk more about sparkling mineral water and it’s cholesterol lowering and bone strengthening benefits. Only recently have I discovered a gem of a shop in Auckland called the Aquadeli that specialize in mineral water of all varieties imported and local.

Apple Whitening

It’s near impossible to avoid foods that stain your teeth: coffee, red wine, berries, dark chocolate… the list goes on. And no matter how often you visit the dentist, they will inevitably lose their pearly white appearance. Sure you can have them artificially whitened a few times a year but the peroxides that are used (hydrogen and carbamide) wears down tooth enamel exposing dentine and causing sensitivity… not to mention the process can hurt like hell. Equally, brush on teeth whiteners sound good on paper, but are just as bad on your teeth. The Glycerin and alcohol content in brush on teeth whiteners can strip moisture from the teeth, leaving gums (and your breath) in bad shape as well as causing sensitivity.
