Coming Face to Face with Your Face

Have you noticed that it takes longer to get your face ready to leave the house these days?

This is not something that happens overnight, but it does happen to all of us. I remember a time when I could shower, and be ready to go anywhere within half an hour. I could get by with a squirt of cream, a fluff of powder and a minimum of fuss. Those were the golden years.

From age thirteen and for two years thereafter, I suffered horrendously with acne. This unfortunate teenage follicular disorder caused my face to resemble a cheese grater. I wore my hair over my face in a Janis Joplin-esque curtain at all times.

Detox Secret Weapon

After a month (or two) of decadence it’s time to say goodbye to the booze, bon voyage to the late nights and good riddance to sugar. Oh yes, it’s detox time and today I start mine.

The biggest mistake many make when embarking on a detox is not easing into it first. Going cold turkey on sugar for instance can spike insulin levels, drag energy levels way down and make you crave it all that much more. So my first detox tip is: Preparation.

Miracle Chinese Detox

He Shou Wu

Living in Hong Kong I am surrounded by an abundance of fresh vegetables, live fish and meats on the streets. The melange makes for a very colourful neighbourhood – the aroma however, is another story.

One amazing thing I found here tucked away in a Chinese traditional medicine shop is a root herb known for its detoxifying benefits and ability to get rid of bloating – He Shou Wu (or Fo-ti Root).

PHD Cleanse

Indulgent is a word I have used far too often lately when describing meals out and social appointments alike. So last week I chose to practice the virtues of another word… repentance.

JUICY DETOX TIP: Cucumber & Celery to the Rescue!

How is everyone going on their Detox mission and other New Year’s Resolutions? Since I’ve been back home and into the normal routine I’ve stepped up my Detox mission and on Emma’s instruction bought a juicer. The morning regimen now includes a large glass of vegetable juice before Breakfast – this may sound unappealing but once you find the right combination of ingredients it can taste quite nice believe it or not. The benefits of regular intake of vegetable juice include better digestion, stronger immune system and has been described as working as the ‘building stones of the body’. Celery and cucumber juice are two goodies – after reading why you will want to go and buy a juicer to stick them in immediately!

QUICK DETOX TIP: Sugar Cravings & Low Energy

I definitely recommend the use of stevia too! It allows you to keep the “sweetness” in your food while you nix the sugar, honey, sweet fruits and other yeast-feeders. Not only does this allow the body to Detox but will also alleviate the symptoms of candida and other fungal issues, as well as allowing the excess weight to drop off. I use stevia in my smoothies, ‘hot chocolate’, overly-icky-vegetable juices, lemon water and cleverly healthy sweet treats.
