Nuts About Coconuts

I have a new and unexpected food addiction: coconuts. Young (green), fresh coconuts that is. Anytime. Anywhere. And unlike most food addictions this one actually assists in weight loss and is anti-ageing.

Coconuts (specifically coconut oil) has been erroneously labeled unhealthy over the past 20 years because it is high in saturated fat- which we all want to avoid … right? However, the saturated fat in coconut oil is completely different from the type of saturated fat found in meats and other vegetable oils. The benefit of using coconuts (and coconut oil) for weight loss is the fact that it is easy to digest. The fat molecules in coconut oil are unique and unlike any other fats and oils. It requires fewer digestive enzymes to be broken down, so instead of being stored as fat, the body converts it straight into useable energy. And, not only is it easy to digest, coconut oil improves the body’s absorption of minerals and vitamins too.

So start incorporating coconut into your diet and reap the health benefits. Start by switching to coconut oil instead of other oils for all your cooking (it’s significantly healthier than vegetable oil and olive oil). Try adding a tablespoon of coconut oil (or coconut cream- yes you read this correctly) to your fruit smoothies – it tastes delicious! Drink fresh coconut water instead of fruit juice or ghastly fizzy drinks. If you need to use flour, then try coconut flour. Not only is coconut flour gluten free, but is also naturally low in digestible carbohydrates and rich in dietary fiber.

*When buying coconut oil always look for organic extra virgin (available at all good wholefood stores).

Other health benefits of coconut and coconut oil:

•   Hair Care: Coconut oil is an excellent conditioner and helps in the re-growth of damaged hair. Regular use will ensure that your scalp is free of dandruff. It also provides the essential proteins required for nourishing hair and keeps it healthy.

•   Skin Care: Coconut oil is excellent massage oil for the skin. It acts as an effective moisturizer on all skin types, particularly dry skin. It also helps in treating various skin problems including psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and other skin infections. Coconut oil is the basic ingredient of many good skin care products.

•   Premature Aging: Coconut helps in preventing premature aging and degenerative diseases due to its antioxidant properties.

•   Heart Diseases: There is a misconception spread among many people that coconut oil is not good for the heart. This is because it contains a large quantity of saturated fats (they are of the healthy variety however). Coconut oil is beneficial for the heart. It contains about 50% lauric acid, which helps in preventing various heart problems including heart burns, high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. The saturated fats present in coconut oil are not harmful as it happens in case of other vegetables oils. It does not lead to increase in LDL and HDL levels.

•   Digestion: Coconut oil helps in improving the digestive system and thus prevents various stomach and digestion related problems including irritable bowel syndrome. Coconut oil also helps in absorption of other nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and amino acids so try cooking with it whenever possible.

•   Immunity: Coconut oil strengthens the immune system as it contains antimicrobial lipids, lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid which have antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties.

•   Healing & infections: When applied on infections, it forms a chemical layer, which protects the infected body part from external dust, air, fungi, bacteria and virus. The curative properties of coconut oil are useful in healing as well. It speeds up the repairing of damaged tissues. Coconut oil is also effective on fungi and yeast that cause candidiasis, ringworm, athlete’s foot, thrush, diaper rash, etc.

•   Kidney: Coconut oil helps in preventing kidney and gall bladder diseases. It also helps in dissolving kidney stones.

•   Diabetes: Coconut oil helps in controlling blood sugar, and improves the secretion of insulin. It also helps in effective utilization of blood glucose, thereby preventing and treating diabetes.

•   Bones: Coconut oil improves the ability of our body to absorb important minerals. These include calcium and magnesium, which are necessary for development of bones.

•   Dental health: Calcium is an important element present in teeth. Since coconut oil facilitates absorption of calcium by the body, it helps in forming strong teeth. Coconut oil also acts as a barrier to tooth decay.

New Zealand based Nature Bee was born in 1997 when Jeff and Ben Cook joined forces. The father / son team discovered a special process developed by Canterbury University, still considered to be ground breaking today, that unlocks the nutrients of bee pollen, making it far more digestible than normal bee pollen. This proprietary process was later to be named the ‘potentiation process' and is continually used only by Nature Bee on their New Zealand bee pollen. Nature Bee is now available in almost every country in the world.
