Juicy Fasting

Juice fasting or cleansing has become the detox method du jour and for good reason. Juicing is one of the fastest ways for our bodies to absorb essential nutrients from fruit and vegetables that support our overall health and immunity. Your body needs an array of different vitamins and minerals to sustain good health, juicing is a great way to concentrate those nutrients to get the benefits without having to eat 5 kgs of fresh produce a day.

Inspired by the documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, that follows Australian Joe Cross on a 60-day juice fast that sees him pull his health back from the brink, I decided to do my own fast. I figured if this guy can do 60 days surely I can do 3!?

Post 3-day juice fast
Days after the juice fast I felt more energized and noticed that my eyes were, and still are, whiter and brighter. The health benefits are definitely visible; any pre-fast bloating is gone, my skin has never looked better and overall I feel ‘lighter’. But I would like to add that juice fasting for 3 days sucks and that anyone who says it’s easy deserves a slap.

So if you have ever considered doing a juice fast there are 10 valuable things I learnt through my 3-day journey that I’d like to share with you:

  1. Juice fasting is unsociable. When you do not eat 99.9% of people think you are strange. You are no longer a functioning member of society.
  2. Juice fasting does not make you a nice person. Watching people eat conjures up feelings of jealousy and resentment towards innocent bystanders.
  3. Joe Cross (the man who juice fasted for 60-days) is not human and may have lost a part of his soul at day 20.
  4. Juice fasting will help you sleep better. When you are hungry at 9pm at night and choose not to eat all you want to do is go to sleep.
  5. Juice fasting is not for the faint hearted. During my 3 days of fasting I almost gave up 25 times.
  6. Juice fast with a friend. Think of them like your Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor – you can ring them when you feel like you’re going to give in and they’ll talk you round.
  7. Important decision-making is not advisable whilst juice fasting. You are not of sound mind and may tend towards the negative.
  8. Food is underrated. When you do a juice fast you will realise this.
  9. Juice fasting and the gym do not go together. Keep all exercise light. Walking will become your best friend. Passing out at the gym is not a good look.
  10. Once completed a juice fast you will have an involuntary violent reaction towards anyone who says that juice fasting is easy.

Doing a juice fast is a great way to press the reset button on your system. It gives your body the opportunity to clean out any unwanted toxins. Personally, unless I was feeling extremely out of balance health-wise, I wouldn’t do a 3-day juice fast again but I will be adopting a 1-day fast once a month. The juicing regime I adopted was my own juice recipe consisting of kale, lemon, apple, carrot, ginger and parsley; I had 6 large glasses of this a day.

There are dedicated juice cleanse therapists that will tailor a juice fast to suit your nutrition goal. If you’re in New Zealand see Phd Cleanse and KK Lifestyle for more info.

New Zealand based Nature Bee was born in 1997 when Jeff and Ben Cook joined forces. The father / son team discovered a special process developed by Canterbury University, still considered to be ground breaking today, that unlocks the nutrients of bee pollen, making it far more digestible than normal bee pollen. This proprietary process was later to be named the ‘potentiation process' and is continually used only by Nature Bee on their New Zealand bee pollen. Nature Bee is now available in almost every country in the world.
